Phoebe Shepherd, Psy.D.

Licensed Psychologist

Dr. Phoebe Shepherd is a licensed clinical psychologist who provides psychotherapy to adults, couples, adolescents, and children. She specializes in the long- and short-term treatment of complex trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, and substance use disorders, as well as interpersonal and relational difficulties and life transitions. Dr. Shepherd utilizes an integrative and collaborative approach to psychotherapy, drawing from psychodynamic and attachment-based models while also using techniques from modalities such as internal family systems and sensorimotor psychotherapy.

In the therapy room, Dr. Shepherd aims to foster a warm, empathic, non-judgmental, and supportive space where individuals can feel safe to explore all the different parts of themselves. She believes in using a holistic approach that integrates the mind, body, and spirit. While she recognizes the importance of insight-oriented work, she also believes that there is a limit to how much can be accessed and processed through purely talking. As such, Dr. Shepherd believes in
the importance of creativity in therapy, using creative ways to access emotions or stored trauma in the body such as different somatic, mindfulness, or guided imagery exercises.

Dr. Shepherd welcomes and affirms patients of all racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender identities. She approaches therapy through a multicultural lens, recognizing the need to practice cultural
humility throughout the process.

Dr. Shepherd received her doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology. Her doctoral research and related peer-reviewed publications have focused on the use of integrative approaches to treating complex PTSD. Dr. Shepherd completed her pre-doctoral internship at Lenox Hill Hospital. She additionally completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Mount Sinai World Trade Center Mental Health Program, where she provided trauma-focused group and individual psychotherapy to first responders. Other previous clinical training experiences include working in inpatient and outpatient hospitals, college counseling centers, and community mental health clinics.
