Dr. Julie Slotnick is a post-doctoral psychologist at Williamsburg Therapy Group. She works with individuals and couples in both short- and long-term psychotherapy, as well as with children and adolescents. She assists patients with a wide range of issues, including life transitions, anxiety, depression, grief and bereavement, relationship and family challenges, trauma, identity struggles, and questions related to gender and sexuality. She helps patients feel empowered to make decisions that shape their lives to be freer, more authentic, and more connected.
Dr. Slotnick conducts therapy with a patient-focused approach, combining deep insight-oriented work rooted in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy with pragmatic strategies and problem-solving. She believes that psychotherapy should result in greater self-knowledge as well as greater self-efficacy. A successful treatment is one which relieves symptoms and fosters greater psychological capacities and internal resources, including building the potential for trust and intimacy, increasing comfort with emotions, and facing areas of avoidance.
Her first goal is to build a strong alliance with patients, and then to work collaboratively to make a treatment plan that promotes change in a safe framework. The work of therapy is to destabilize deeply entrenched patterns of thought and behavior to create the opportunity to expand and grow; this work can only be done when there is trust between the therapist and patient. Dr. Slotnick works with patients’ strengths and helps them find the motivation and hope to take on life’s challenges.
Dr. Slotnick received her Doctorate in Psychology from City College, CUNY. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at Jamaica Hospital, where she worked with individuals with severe mental illness both acute and chronic. She also received training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis, and worked with intellectually gifted and twice-exceptional children at an NYC elementary school.
