Gregory Weil, PhD

Post Doctoral Psychologist

Dr. Gregory Weil (he/him) is a post-doctoral psychologist at Williamsburg Therapy Group. He provides short- and long-term psychotherapy to adults and older adolescents. He specializes in issues related to depression, anxiety, personality disorders, and substance abuse, in addition to helping clients work through relationship problems, grief and loss, life transition issues, and challenges surrounding gender and sexual identity. His clinical interests include fostering identity development, building emotional awareness, and helping clients to self-advocate.

Dr. Weil believes that fostering open collaboration and safety in the therapeutic relationship are the bedrock to an effective treatment. The process of both taking necessary space and feeling heard by another can give people a deeper acceptance of themselves and more power in their self-narrative. Dr. Weil utilizes a relational and psychodynamic approach to therapy, helping clients understand how the development of their internal world impacts their experience of the external world, as well as how they relate to themselves and others. He also integrates cognitive-behavioral, ACT, and mindfulness-based therapy techniques to assist clients with emotional regulation and acceptance.

Dr. Weil is known to have a warm, approachable, and reflective demeanor, exhibiting a deep interest and curiosity in his clients’ experiences. He comes to each case with a sense of cultural humility, recognizing that each person is the expert of their own experience within their intersectional identities.

Dr. Weil earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The New School and completed a concentration in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling during his master’s degree studies. His doctoral training has included clinical practice in hospital settings, community mental health clinics, college counseling centers, and harm reduction organizations. He completed his pre-doctoral internship at Pace University Counseling Center, where he received extensive training in providing individual and group psychotherapy to young adults experiencing a wide range of mental health issues. He also worked as a consultant to the university’s LGBTQA+ Center and received an award for his dedication to allyship in the community.

His doctoral research explored the emergence of conflict avoidance in patient-therapist relationships and fostering a facilitative environment for brave conversations about the therapy process.
