Allegra Nevins, PsyD

Licensed Psychologist

Dr. Allegra Nevins is a clinical psychologist who provides individual and group psychotherapy services to adults presenting with a variety of mental health concerns, including addiction, trauma, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, psychosis, shame, anger, and relationship distress. Utilizing an integrative theoretical model known as Assimilative Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Dr. Nevins draws from both psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral schools of thought to affect behavioral change, improve quality of life, and increase self-awareness.

Dr. Nevins specializes in the treatment of addictions, both to substances (e.g., alcohol, prescription and illicit drugs, tobacco) and behaviors (e.g., gambling, compulsive sexual behaviors, binge eating, overspending, internet gaming). She approaches addiction treatment from a harm-reduction model and has received formal training in evidence-based approaches/therapies for addictions, including Motivational Interviewing (MI), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Dr. Nevins takes special care to work with her clients to identify the function of the client's addiction and address the mental health concerns that may be underlying and reinforcing it.

Dr. Nevins understands the importance of meeting her clients where they are and approaches treatment from a culturally-sensitive, nonjudgmental stance; she works with individuals from a variety of different ethnic and racial backgrounds and is LGBTQIA+-friendly, sex-positive, and kink-allied. Dr. Nevins also emphasizes the importance of collaboration within the therapeutic relationship to assure treatment is individualized and her clients' needs are met.

Dr. Nevins earned her masters and doctorate from Long Island University. Her research has focused on improving treatment outcomes for individuals struggling with substance use disorders and on understanding the association between chronic substance use and increased anger/aggression. She has a collective six years of psychiatric inpatient experience and has also trained in college counseling centers, community-based outpatient settings, hospital-based outpatient settings, and forensic settings. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital on the Addiction & Recovery track and her postdoctoral fellowship at Northwell Health’s Addiction Recovery Services. Dr. Nevins has also presented at a variety of continuing education seminars, where she has discussed topics such as tobacco cessation, the treatment of problematic gambling, and the importance of incorporating intersectionality in clinical work.
